Greater Grace Temple's 'Bicycle Christmas' Giveway Will Pass the 3,000 Bicycle Mark in 2008
GGT Expects to Give Out Its 3,000th FREE bicycle This Christmas. Expect plenty of happy faces and big smiles at their annual giveaway for children of financially-strapped families.
DETROIT, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- With recent layoffs and a tight economy, some families could face a Christmas with few or even no gifts under the tree. Yet, Greater Grace Temple will bring smiles to nearly 250 youngsters this year with its "Bicycle Christmas" giveaway.
The church will be giving away 250 brand new bicycles to children from financially struggling families on Sunday, December 21, 2008. The giveaway will begin after the 10:00 a.m. service (approx. 12:30 p.m. - 12:45 p.m.). The church partnered with Meijer Stores and Sinai Grace Hospital to make the giveaway possible. Donations also came from church members.
"For many people, one of their fondest childhood memories was to receive a brand new bicycle on Christmas morning," says GGT's Senior Pastor Bishop Charles H. Ellis III. "We want to do something to help those youngsters whose families who are hit hard by this economy and could face having little or nothing under the tree on Christmas Day."
The bike giveaway began in 2002, with the church giving away 500 bikes per year until 2007 when 300 were given out. This year, with help from Meijer and Sinai Grace Hospital of Detroit, they will give out 250 bikes and are excited to be able to do so during a troubled economy.
All recipients signed up earlier this month for the giveaway and are required to attend the Dec. 21st morning worship service to get a bike. These bicycles are for children 5-10 years old, and are given away on a "first come, first served" basis.
Greater Grace Temple has given away more than 2,800 bikes to financially struggling families over the last 5 years. The church is located at 23500 W. Seven Mile Road in Detroit, MI.
